Appointed to District 17, Seat #3

In February, 2024, Doug received the honor of a lifetime. He was nominated by his peers at the NC Bar Association to fill judicial seat #3 in District 17. He was chosen by Governor Roy Cooper to serve. Being on the bench in his hometown is a dream come true.

Doug earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from Duke University. He later earned a Masters in Business Administration from Elon University and then his Juris Doctor degree from North Carolina Central University School of Law. Following law school, Doug began practicing law in Orlando, Florida concentrating then in personal injury law and employment law. While in Florida, Doug was a member of the Florida Bar, Orange County Bar, a member of the U.S. Court of Appeals, 11 th Circuit and a member of the U.S. District Court, Middle District of Florida. Doug practiced in Florida for 16 years, returning home following an illness of his mother. Upon his return, Doug served as an Alamance County Assistant District Attorney for over 3 years. Doug was a partner at the law firm of Smith Giles, LLC for 2 ½ years before becoming an Assistant Attorney General at the North Carolina Department of Justice. Doug is currently the sitting District Court Judge for Alamance County. He is a member of the North Carolina Bar, Alamance County Bar and a member of the U.S. District Court, Middle District of North Carolina.
